Automating Mask Production and Packaging with Low Cost Automation
Faced with the unexpected demand for respiratory protection masks, Breckle GmbH rapidly restructured its production processes. Initially handcrafted, masks were later produced using step-by-step automation solutions to meet rising demand. Space-saving machinery, hygienic components, and fast delivery were prioritized. For fully automated packaging, Breckle uses igus gantry systems, where masks are efficiently filled into cardboard boxes via conveyor belts using drylin bearings and shafts. The gantries, driven by lubricant-free flat toothed belts, meet stringent hygiene standards. Controlled via a B&R controller and dryve D1 motor controller, the system achieves reliable production. Each week, four machines with 20 employees produce approximately 100,000 surgical and FFP2 masks. Automation reduced production from three shifts to two and achieved significant cost savings.
